Geography Flashcards!
Can you believe it?! A post completely unrelated to adoption!
I have been working very hard on creating a set of flashcards for this cycle’s geography. I made flashcards for the first twelve weeks of cycle 1 and my children did amazing with them. My goal was to make cards for every single location for cycle 2. Alas, there are 122 cards in all! I decided to scan them into a PDF (or three smaller PDFs to be exact, because one was WAY too big!) so I could make them available to other CC families whose children respond well with visual cues. They would also be great to use during geography if you’re a tutor. I used mine a lot last year in class and my little four and five year olds learned fast!
Most important thing to note:
**Each card is labeled with the location, but there is nothing referencing a cycle or week anywhere on the cards because I don’t want to infringe on any copyright laws and get CC corporate on my hiney.**
Second most important thing to note:
**All proceeds will go toward our remaining adoption expenses.** (oops, I guess this post wasn’t completely unrelated to adoption.)
I must tell you, I originally planned to sell the download for $10. It took me weeks to finish these, they’re in color, labeled, ready to print and use. But then I started to think about the fact that you still have to print them, fold the labels over (each map and label are side-by-side so you’ll fold each label over to the back after you print). You may also choose to glue the entire thing to a 4×6 index card for better durability, and if you’re like me, you’ll laminate the finished product! Therefore, I’m only asking $5.
These cards may also be printed in black and white or grayscale to save money. We have an InkBoy near our house and they do $.01 black and white copies if you bring your own paper. But I must say, the color adds a lot to the cards. The only color is the water and the small location in red or orange on each card. Here is an example: There are two cards with labels on each page and this is what they’ll look like when you cut them out:
And this is what it will look like once you fold the label over:
Another beneficial aspect of these flashcards is that I chose to use several different maps to create the cards and best display each individual location. As a result, your student will be challenged to find a familiar location on each card as they first begin to study and learn them. For example, India and Italy are two places that are pretty easy to pick out if you’re looking at a map of Asia or Europe. You’ll be amazed how much their knowledge of world geography will grow this year.
If you’d like to purchase the PDF downloads for my European and World Geography Flashcards, please click on the “donate” button to the right and follow Paypal’s instruction. In the note or memo section please let me know what email you’d like your download sent to. I will be sending the first “batch” of downloads on Saturday. This allows me a few days to do some final editing that will make the cards even better. These cards have been reviewed and edited by three other CC moms and each location has been cross-referenced with the Foundations Guide and at least one extra map source. However, I’m still human. If you purchase the download and find a mistake, please let me know and I’ll fix it ASAP and re-send the corrected card(s) to everyone who has already purchased them.
We love geography in our house, it just took us a few years to figure out how to best utilize (and master) our maps. Flashcards and consistent drawing/tracing are definitely the keys for my children (and me)! I hope you enjoy them.
…and please pass this link along to your CC friends!

Hi Audrey,
What are your thoughts on printing and laminating your flash cards w/o the labels and writing the location on the back with sharpie permanent marker?
How many cards print on one piece of computer paper? Did you cut yours with large paper cutter?
Thank you!
Sheila
P.S. Congratulations on your adoption, we loveeeee adoption.

Audrey, this is so wonderful!! I am very proud of you and your boys-such hard workers! May God bless you with you a sweet enduring patience until time for your trip.

Would you be willing to print them off and send them my way for $100? – I don’t do PDFs well, it looks like a good resource, and I’m SO IMPRESSED by your willingness to bring home 3 girls! (We have 3 girls and brought home our son from China 4 months ago using Lifeline.) Let me know if you’d be willing. (I don’t mind doing the trimming… just would want them printed off (in color).

Well, the labels are already on them when you print the cards, you just have to fold the label over to the back before you laminate. You could certainly cut the label off and write on the back with a Sharpie after laminating if you want, but I would think it would end up being more work for you in the end. There are three cards on each page and I used a large paper cutter to do mine.

We are laminating right now! They look superb!!! Thanks, friend!

Hi Audrey, i got this link from a friend, bit I am not able to find how to order and pay for the cards. I will be more than happy to get the cards and help to your loving cause. Thanks

I printed mine out. I cut them with a paper cutter while I watched tv. I folded them over, and decided not to glue them to index cards. I think with the fold and the laminating they’ll be plenty sturdy. I wish you had another set for Africa and South America!! Glad to be a teeny part of your adoption story!

Can you give me a price on printing them out & mailing them? I only have a black/white printer & I would want these in color.Maybe even on some better paper so I can have them laminated. thanks

Hey Audrey, I paid for the flashcards using my husband’s paypal, but I didn’t see a place to make a note. His address is maxwell.joshua@gmail.com. Mine is anjelface84@gmail.com. I’d prefer them sent to my address if you get this. Thanks!

August 12th, 2013 at 1:02 pm
These cards are awesome. Thank you for sharing them. I did use the donate button but it did not ask me for an email addy. Do you need anything further or will you be able to gain that info from paypal?
I hope the adoption goes smoothly and beautifully for you!
August 12th, 2013 at 1:05 pm
Thanks for all the hard work. How do I order some?
August 12th, 2013 at 1:07 pm
Never mind, just had to read a little further down.
August 12th, 2013 at 5:57 pm
I really appreciate that they don’t say CC Cycle 2:week 2, etc., but will it be obvious to us how they fit into each week? We are not doing CC this year, for the first time after four years, but another similar progesm, so I’ll be using these maps in another classical environment–covering the same timeline… Thanks!
August 12th, 2013 at 7:51 pm
Hey! Love these…just ordered mine a few hours ago. When should I expect them to be emailed to me?
August 13th, 2013 at 8:53 pm
These are AWESOME! Thanks so much for the time and effort you put in to them. A couple of other thoughts on how to use them…print them on cardstock, cut the cards apart (map on one piece, name on another), use them to play card games (i.e. matching name to location); take just the name cards in a stack, turn them over one by one and find the location on a larger map; take just the map cards and do the same also naming the location (learning the skill of identifying from map to map). Wonderful tool! Thanks again.

just *hoping* — are the cards only for nations? or do they also include the cities, rivers, mountain ranges, seas, etc………. my lg knows the nations pretty well, but the little stuff is new to her.
🙂
October 25th, 2013 at 11:01 am
The cards are much more than just nations. There are 121 locations and features in all, including many cities, mountain ranges, rivers, etc. The Ancient through Modern World set includes the 13 original colonies and several points from Ancient MesoAmerica.

Audey,
It is well into the school year, but I am glad I found your cards – better late than never. As others have requested, are you still willing to print and mail a completed set of cards? Thanks.

hi Audrey,
I have the same question as someone above. I do not have a colored printer but would LOVE these cards in color. What could I pay you to get these sent in mail, color copied? I, too, am fine with cutting them out myself…. Would love to contribute to such a good cause, as well as a great learning tool for my kids!
thanks so much!!!
